Successful Leadership: Ingredients of the remedy against prejudice

The biggest achievements of our brain in terms of perception and the ability to judge situations are all based on prejudice. Our psyche usually ´knows´ in advance what to expect in a given situation. When the expectation then comes true, all that is needed is a quick confirmation check.

Dr. Felix Frei, Psychologist and Management-Consultant in Zürich, is warning: "Consider that in the cost-benefit analysis, the time you gain by prejudging instead of truly judging is pretty small."

He suggests five ingredients of the remedy against prejudice:

  • We need curiosity
  • We must not be afraid
  • We need an open mind
  • We need intelligence
  • We need confidence

"Someone who begins to reflect actively on his or her prejudice gains curiosity, fearlesness, openness, intelligence and confidence in the process. If beauty and fitness were added to that, we wold have a miracle drug."

Frei suggests: "Start searching for your own preconceptions - in what areas are you prejudiced? Try looking for your prejudices in the place, where you keep your certainties. Look at situations specifically to check whether they can be looked at, thought about, judged or handled in a different manner. Consider these alternative perspectives when meeting others: your partner, your children, your boss, your employees and even your biggest enemy ...

It certainly can´t be wrong to look at your own (pre)judgements a little more critically; not only because even in our civilized world a chair can be broken - possibly because a colleague has sawn through one leg, but also because sometimes the most incompetent employee has an idea that should have been listened to ..."
