Industrial and Organisational Psychology in Health and Occupational Safety: Current Developments, Professionalisation and Future Prospects
Abstract
Industrial and organisational psychology is clearly gaining in importance within the German occupational safety and health system. This development is driven by changing working conditions resulting from digitalisation, increased flexibility, hybrid working, and new demands on leadership and organisation, coupled with the effects of the shortage skilled labor and a perceived increase in psychological stressors. Under the updated Regulation 2 of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), occupational and organisational psychologists are now granted access to qualification as occupational safety specialists, in the same way as technical staff. Furthermore, the relevant committees and institutions are defining psychological strain as a topic relevant to regulation and policy-making within occupational safety and health. At the same time, the Professional Association of German Psychologists, the German Psychological Society and the Professional Association for Psychology in Occupational Safety and Health are pooling their activities within the ‘Industrial and Organisational Psychology in Health and Occupational Safety’ initiative. This initiative aims to position expertise in industrial and organisational psychology within the fields of health and occupational safety in a way that is more clearly defined in professional terms, more visible politically and more effective in practice. The article argues that, in future, occupational and organisational psychology can contribute not merely in a complementary capacity, but as a structuring force to the further development of a people-centred, evidence-based and interdisciplinary approach to occupational health and safety.

Assessment, evaluation, and design of psychosocial risk at work
Abstract
In the context of labor shortages, demographic change, and increasing psychological demands on employees, psychosocial risk assessment (PRA) has become increasingly important and represents a key instrument for the human-centered design of work. This article examines methodological challenges associated with the assessment and evaluation of psychosocial risks as well as with the development and implementation of preventive interventions. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of scientifically grounded diagnostic procedures, the selection of appropriate assessment methods, and the evidence-based evaluation of psychosocial hazards. In addition, the paper discusses the challenge of balancing participatory approaches with occupational psychological expertise in the development of effective interventions.

Psychosocial emergency care in workplaces as part of occupational health and safety
Abstract
Psychosocial emergency care (PSNV) is conceptualised as part of occupational health and safety (OHS). Workplace emergencies can cause psychological health impairments that may be recognised as consequences of an occupational accident under German Social Code Book VII. The DGUV-funded SRH University project “Psychosocial Emergency Care in Companies – An Assessment of Implementation in Germany” (DGUV-FF-FP0475) examines workplace PSNV practice from multiple perspectives. Nine studies included companies and affected employees, accident insurance institutions, volunteer PSNV-B teams, and external providers. The analysis is using the Phase Model of Psychosocial Emergency Care in Companies (PM PSNV-U), further developed within the project to distinguish prevention, acute support, continuing support, external rehabilitation, and workplace reintegration. Results reveal existing components of care but no consistent phase-spanning integration. Particularly critical are transitions following acute support and deficits in documentation, reporting, and reintegration. Implications for risk assessment, leadership training, insurer interfaces, and workplace integration management are discussed.

Work-Related Mobility, Transportation, and Traffic: Current Challenges for Health and Safety
Abstract
This article examines work-related mobility as a key but still underestimated area within occupational health and safety. The article systematises occupational mobility, traffic and transport, traces the historical development of traffic psychology and analyses current accident and usage data. Particular attention is paid to driver assistance systems and automated driving functions, as well as the growing use of new electric modes of transport such as e-scooters, e-bikes and pedelecs on journeys to and from work and on business trips. Whilst these developments offer potential for improved safety, they simultaneously create new hazards due to incorrect operation, risk compensation, inadequate training, altered exposure and specific injury patterns. Effective prevention must go beyond isolated information or training measures. Promising approaches include integrated, participatory and organisationally embedded strategies that combine technical vehicle equipment, safe transport routes, fatigue and stress management, qualified training, feedback systems, managerial action and a safety culture. Work-related mobility is thus understood as a genuine component of an organisation’s occupational health and safety responsibilities, which must be systematically developed further in light of technical, organisational and societal changes in mobility.

Arbeitsbedingungen und Arbeitssicherheit aus arbeitspsychologischer Sicht – Kurzbeitrag
Florian Schweden1

Working conditions and safety at work from an occupational psychology perspective – a short article
Abstract
This brief article focuses on evidence indicating that workplace safety is closely linked to working conditions. Workplace accidents often result not solely from individual error, but from the interplay of people, technology, and organizational factors. Industries such as construction, metalworking, agriculture, healthcare, and transportation are particularly high-risk. Causes of accidents include inadequate safety precautions, high work pressure, technical hazards, and insufficient communication. From an occupational psychology perspective, the primary focus is on creating safe working conditions and prevention. The MTO-approach and the Action Regulation Theory emphasize that errors often result from a lack of information, overload, or poor work design. The Job Demands-Resources Model also shows that high demands contribute to stress, while resources such as social support, autonomy, and feedback strengthen motivation and safety. In summary, a positive safety culture—in which safety is clearly prioritized and actively supported by managers—is particularly important. The possibilities offered by digitalization create new opportunities but also entail risks such as psychological strain (e.g., constant availability). Sustainable prevention therefore requires a holistic approach to work design, safe processes, training, and a strong safety culture.

Menschengerechte Gestaltung von Arbeitsaufgaben und Arbeitssystemen in Zeiten Digitaler Transformation und omnipräsenter KI – Globale Herausforderungen für Arbeitspsychologie und Arbeitswissenschaft
Wolfgang Kötter1

Designing humane work tasks and healthy, human centered work systems in the age of digital transformation and ubiquitous AI – Global challenges for occupational psychology and advanced ergonomics
Abstract
Digital transformation and the increasing use of AI-based systems are rising the fundamental questions of human-centered work design in new ways. It is not the technology itself that determines the quality of work, but rather the way in which work tasks, decision-making autonomy, the division of labor between humans and technology, training, participation, and organizational responsibility are structured. Consequently, the focus is shifting from a lack of knowledge in ergonomics to an implementation problem: During the development and application of digital technologies, the available criteria, procedures, and institutions for preventive work design are often applied too late, too selectively, or without sufficient commitment.

Perspektiven auf menschenwürdige Basisarbeit
Monika Eigenstetter1
1 Hochschule Niederrhein

Perspectives on decent work for unskilled workers
Abstract
Decent work is frequently discussed in the context of international supply chains. However, decent work is a fundamental right that has not yet been fully realised, even in Germany. As a particular group of workers, those engaged in low-skilled jobs experience violations of their fundamental rights more frequently, due to disregard for their rights and, in some cases, precarious working conditions which lead to significant adverse effects on their health. People working in low-skilled jobs are exposed to work-related health risks to a significantly greater extent than other groups of workers, as they have, for example, less access to health-related further training. Taking into account the multiple pressures faced by people in low-skilled jobs, greater recognition of their work, and occupational health and safety measures that integrate climate change into hazard analysis can help to reduce social inequality and improve the health of vulnerable groups.
