Happiness in Modern Society and the Tragedy of Culture. A Sociological Perspective
Happiness in modern society is a matter of tensions and contradictions, because the process of modernization was accompanied by emotional impacts. In modernity, money is forcing social relations and personal emotions into patterns of purposeful rationality, while at the same time, the consumption of commodities is charged up emotionally, becoming a driver for the pursuit of happiness. In postmodernity, this cultural divide widens once more. But is the false happiness of consumerism the only existing happiness? How could authentic happiness look like? Finally, based on distinctions between everyday knowledge constructions and non-everyday spheres of meaning, happiness will be described as a partial and self-choosen transcendence of self.
Key words: Happiness, rationality and emotions, everyday life and non-everyday life spheres

Montaignes Konzept des Glücks
Norbert Rath

Montaignes Concept of Happiness
Subject of the Essais by Montaigne is neither politics, nor justice, nor metaphysics - the Essais deal with questions and answers on good and successful life. Subjects therefore are two questions, first the question on what happiness is and second why people do not spent more time of their life and draw more attention to become happy under the available possibilities. If the human being succeeds to equilibrate its life between nature and the requirements of culture, Montaigne thought happiness is naturally intended for human life. Up from this idea his anecdotes, reminiscences, stories and aphorisms receive their specific undertone. Lot of his insights into the historic forms, cultural variations as well as the bodily, mental and social conditions of a good life seem to be very modern. Its idea emphasizes the secular being in the world, the sensual and natural roots and the perishability of the experience of happiness.
Key words: happiness, nature-culture, to balance oneself

Zur Kritik der Positiven Psychologie
Philipp Mayring

Critical Points in Positive Psychology
The paper gives an overview of research in social sciences on happiness and well-being. The cited studies go back to the middle of the 20th century. A broad range of conceptual and empirical contributions in different disciplines is provided. Following those studies we have to differentiate the construct of well-being in concepts like happiness, satisfaction, joy, freedom from stresses. Well-being concepts can only be understood within a complex model of biographical and societal pre-conditions, life circumstances and several moderator variables. The postulation of Positive Psychology at the beginning of the 90ies takes its starting point from this research, but argues with simplifications and the excessive pretension to establish a new era in social sciences. A critique of ideology in central positive psychology texts shows some critical points. Above all the exclusiveness of the postulations seems to be problematic.

Why happiness does not necessarily make you happy - Theses on anthropology of happiness
In historical-anthropological perspective my article discusses some basic characteristics of human happiness: that happiness must count as one or the main goal of human life, that people need pictures of a successful life, that happiness exists only in a variety of ideas, that human happiness is just a temporary phenomenon and that happiness is always a blessing in disguise. At the end of this contribution I deduce some practical conclusions out of these theories. It should be particularly clear that misfortune is constitutive of happiness. In this respect, one should not only demand for pursuit of happiness, but also for pursuit of unhappiness.

Gert Hellerich & Daniel White

Postmodern Day-to-Day World: Every Day is a New Day of Design
In the present article we will investigate the day-to-day world from a postmodern perspective. In this connection we will consider Nietzsche and Foucault to be the most significant representatives of the postmodern. We intend to argue that postmodern inquiry applies to the modern day-to-day world and to illustrate how postmodern everydayness is constituted.
